After three successful branches in Mumbai, New Yorker finally comes to town

NOW HERE'S a place where Tortillas are made without eggs! There are a few more unusual things about New Yorker - a restaurant-chain of Mumbai that opened its first branch in the city (Raj Bhavan Road, Somajiguda).

The eatery is a pure-vegetarian one that serves `pure' Mexican and Italian platters, and a few other continental and Indian dishes. A queer aspect that sets the place apart is the partial absence of onion and garlic from the ingredients that make up the menu, - which in itself is an odd melange of unheard-of names like, Jain Pasta Delight, Jain Falafel, Chandni Chowk Rabri Falooda and Very Very Strawberry Soda. "Our chief patrons are Jains," reasons Saboo, the owner. "We are primarily targeting the Marwadi, Gujarati and Jain community which has a reasonably strong presence in the twin cities," he adds. "Since New Yorker is a successful experiment in Mumbai (in business for the last 26-years), success is assured in Hyderabad which has a sizeable number of vegetarians," says the owner.

The first item on the menu - Original New Yorker Nachos with Cheese Sauce, according to Saboo, accounts for 11 per cent of sales at the Mumbai outlet. At Rs. 85, the dish turned out to be mediocre except for the cheese, which was definitely very cheesy and nice. The owner recommends Lime ice soda as the next bestseller, which again is average in taste, somewhat refreshing though. Check out the lunch platters available here. At Rs. 118, one gets half nachos + 1pc Enchiladas + half roll +1 free Pepsi. Ten different combinations are available for one to choose from.

A Lebanese presence in the menu is hinted by Lebanese Falafel (chick pea bullets with tahini and harissa sauces) and Lebanese Sizzler (a sizzling platter of garden fresh vegetables cooked in a hot Lebanese sauce, on a bed of beans and served along with spinach rice and French fries). Among Indian specialities, recommended items are Dum aloo chutneywala with paneer (potatoes stuffed with paneer, simmered in a tangy mint flavoured gravy) and the Tandoori platter (grilled paneer, red, yellow and green capsicum, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and potatoes marinated in tandoori masala, served with kachumber and dahi chutney).

Nifty interiors, a smiling sun on the ceiling and the Statue of Liberty on one of the walls that depicts the Manhattan skyline and cheerful colours on the other walls, characterise the ambience of New Yorker. There are two private dining rooms and a banquet, in addition to the 1500sq.ft restaurant that can seat about 110 guests in all. Chairs are yet to be cosy so you may be in a mood for takeaways.

In that case, do not miss out on the New Yorker Nacho Cheese Sauce (at Rs 45 for 100 ml, it is a promising bet among the rest) As for the other items, "it needs time to get used to Mexican taste," is how the owner puts it. We hope so!
