Time to grab that UPPADA

Mallika Sarabhai opens Vastrabharana, Crafts Council of Karnataka's popular sale, on October 1.

VASTRABHARANA, THE popular exhibition and sale of traditional textiles and jewellery, is round the corner again. This sale, organised every year by the Crafts Council of Karnataka, has women (and men) coming by droves with its sumptuous display of textiles and jewellery. Its inauguration is also done in style and this time the honour goes to none other than danseuse Mallika Sarabhai who will open the six-day event on October 1 at 10.30 a.m. at the Chitrakala Parishat.

Vastrabharana will feature 30 crafts units from 14 states, and all those women who have a passion for those six and nine-yard saris will have a wide range to choose from. On display will be cotton, silk, muga, and tussar, saris, eri shawls, and melka chadars from Assam.

Karnataka will offer new Ilkals designed by the Weavers' Service Centre, Molkamuru silks, traditional cottons from the coastal belt as well as Kasuti embroidery.

Chettinad silks and cotton saris will be the highlight of this year's sale and the spotlight is on Vanya, the wild silks of India, presented in collaboration with the Central Silk Boards.

Women can choose from the pick of Chettinads (top) and Uppadas (above).

To add to the attraction, the sale will also include a wide array of jewellery (silver and gold) in contemporary and traditional designs.

On October 4, there will be a seminar, Hand Woven Silks of India, at 10 a.m.. Those interested in participation may dial 3347299 for registration.
