Colours of Gujarat

Jute jhoolas, wooden jharokhas, sankheda furniture... check out the exquisite craftsmanship of the State's artisans at Gurjari's exhibition.

INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS, exquisite craftsmanship and exuberant colours — that is what makes up the exhibition-cum-sale on at Gurjari, Khader Nawaz Khan Road.

Jute jhoolas, oval tablemats featuring Rabari embroidery and intricately carved wooden jharokhas painted in soft colours seem to infuse new life into the traditional fare normally seen at Gurjari sales. This exhibition brings out, albeit in a small way, the contemporary relevance of Gujarat's traditional craft skills.

Even the block prints seem fresh. Variegated motifs in bright yellows and oranges make for attractive yardage. The material has also been used to create a range of file covers, pencil boxes and office organisers. Enamel work in brass, a Baroda speciality, embellishes wall hangings, napkin holders and artefacts.

Jute finds expression in many craft forms of Gujarat. The three seaters and peedis in jute are smart. Equally eye-catching are the shopping bags with rogan painting.

For those looking for unusual gift items, there are handmade paper boxes, telephone index and diaries decorated with gem paintings in marble. Or one might choose from tribal embroidered belts laced with cowrie shells, mirror-work bags and torans embroidered in pastel hues.

Sankheda furniture, tie and dye cotton saris, vegetable dyed block printed yardage and table and bed linen are also available at the exhibition, which ends on August 16.
