Cleverly crafted

PUSHPA CHARI

The CCIE exhibition features eye-catching artefacts in wood, metal and bone. On till July 29 at Temple Towers, Nandanam.

THE EXHIBITION at the Central Cottage Emporium (CCIE) features decorative, functional craft forms in wood, metal and bone. Art transcends craft, be it in the mango wood panels, carved bone artefacts or white metal vases and boxes that have an antique finish.

The mango wood friezes, panels and brackets from Mysore are eyecatching. Exquisitely carved, the icons and wall hangings have muted lines. The use of a special mauve-pink is an innovative feature in both the icons and animal forms.

The brass metal craft from Aligarh has evolved from basic moulded forms, into well finished icons such as Ganesha, Lakshmi, Krishna and so on.

The CCIE exhibition has on offer a fantastic range of brass icons as well as pretty Ganesha and Lakshmi lamps with 21 deepams. They make perfect accessories for festive occasions and decorative pieces in any living area.

And if you think Jaipur white metal is about shiny flamboyance in brass, look again. The Rajasthani craftspersons have created a range of pretty white metal boxes and vases featuring Mughal style flowers and vines, with an antique finish. Other items include Rajasthani jharokhas, masks and glittering reproductions of Mughal and Rajput miniatures, done in Jaipur's gold foil painting style. The delicately executed paintings serve as a perfect foil to the well-executed Tanjores on display.

The exhibition, which is on at Temple Towers, 672, Anna Salai, Nandanam, ends on July 29.
