Ananya has a unique aid programme for ailing musicians.
|
IN THE light of what has happened to Bismillah Khan, Ananya Cultural Academy's Arogyadhara programme gains significance. Arogyadhara offers free consultation, camps, and surgery to those dependent on music for their livelihood. It gives financial assistant to the extent possible, apart from arranging subsidies on the doctors' fees and hospital charges, to musicians who undergo surgery.
Raghavendra Rao, the brain behind Ananya, clarifies that Arogyadhara is mainly for those musicians who have dedicated their lives to music, but have not made it big. "Through Arogyadhara, we have so far helped three ailing music teachers," he said. Dr. Rao also makes it clear that it is important for Ananya to reach musicians who cannot get help from any other quarter. "There are musicians who charge a steep Rs. 5 lakh as their fee and then there are those who struggle the entire month and make Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000. If they have to see a doctor and pay him a consultation fee of Rs. 250, their month's budget is in the doldrums," he explains.
Has Arogyadhara sent assistance to Bismillah Khan? "No, we haven't. The Ustad is world-acclaimed and he can get attention without much difficulty. Arogyadhara doesn't want to be elitist."
Those who want help from this programme can write to Dr. Raghavendra Rao, 91/2, 4th Main, Malleswaram, Bangalore 560003, or call 3345069/3472020/3471065.
