It's purse-friendly

At Sunlight Leather Exports, which opened its third store in the city, one can pick up elegant purses, handbags and jackets, which are affordable.

THE AVERAGE person usually keeps a safe distance from leather product showrooms in the city. Though the Tamil Nadu is among the country's larger manufacturers and exporters of leather, a small clutch or wallet in "genuine leather", sold in swanky or even not-so-swanky stores in Chennai, costs a small fortune.

But affordable leather may no longer be an oxymoron. Sunlight Leather Exports, which opened its third store in the city this past week, sells quality leather products at affordable prices. Shameel Gani, who runs the store, says the products are sold at the factory price with just a 10 per cent margin. It's a claim that is believable because the bags are priced from Rs. 300 to Rs. 850. You can choose from a range of sequinned evening bags and stiff patent leather creations to sack-like shoulder bags that will fit everything from your digital diary to a set of books.

Men's shoes are priced between Rs. 1,050 and Rs. 3,500. Mid-sized leather stroller suitcases cost about Rs. 2,000. Briefcases, laptop bags, portfolios, business organisers, jewel boxes, belts, key-chains and wallets complete the range of accessories.

Sunlight Leather Exports also displays a range of leather garments. The average price of a soft leather jacket is Rs. 2,200 and students and those going abroad get special discounts, says Gani. The collection of garments includes jackets, trousers, skirts, gloves and caps. The store also makes garments to order, which are completed and delivered within six hours.

Sunlight exports finished leather and leather garments and goods to Europe and the U.S. They have two showrooms in Periamet and "provide products of the same quality as we export in the local stores," according to Gani. He claims that the designs and patterns are in keeping with the styles abroad.

Sunlight Leather Exports is on the corner of TTK Road and Chamiers Road at First floor, 43/77, Chamiers Road, ph: 52030964.
