The Karigar exhibition on at Fabindia till June 27, brings to Chennai the best of the country's craft heritage.
|
MUTED HUES and vibrant colours, new designs and age-old craft traditions go hand in hand at the Karigar exhibition of cotton and silk wear, which is on at Fabindia. The motifs, formats and colours used by each karigar are exclusive and reflected in the finely woven Maheswari saris, salwar kurta yardage, the block printed cotton, silk yardage, dupattas and stoles. The moderately priced collection spans daytime and evening wear.
The white on white printed Maheswaris with typical borders are a delight. Subtle craftsmanship is reflected in the shadowy mingling of amris and flowers in white.
Equally compelling are the bright orange and red saris, block printed with green amris, and tulip motifs on a beige background.
The block printed tussars in rich textures range from white and earth tones to bright orange and pink. The printed and shaded dupattas and Maheswari stoles make interesting fashion statements.
The exhibition, which concludes on June 27, is on at Fabindia, Ilford House, 3, Woods Road, off Anna Salai.
