A taste of the Wild West



Orange Country: You can dig into cowboy cuisine here.

LOOKING FOR some American and TexMex cuisine one evening, we ended up at Orange County at Hotel Central Park. We were pleasantly surprised to find a crooner with a guitar, serenading the guests in true cowboy style. The restaurant, with the logo Coming to America, also gives you a neatly-styled menu, in the shape of a cowboy's jacket, to create the right setting as you decide on your choice of food from the Wild West.

The Mexican fare includes tacos (folded) and tostadas (flat and crisp) with a filling of beans and vegetables or chicken. Also available with chicken or vegetables tossed in fajita seasoning are the sizzler de pollo and sizzler de verdura, priced at Rs. 175.

Where baked dishes are concerned, Orange County offers a few in limited combinations such as fish, shrimp, and chicken with macaroni in white sauce for the non-vegetarians. For the vegetarians, this section offers macaroni with vegetables. The spinach and corn au gratin, titled Apache, is a good option to try, if you are keen on the bakes.

Those who prefer their grilled meats can try Rio Grande, with chicken in pepper and mushroom sauce, or the gunslinger, a similar preparation with minced meat. Non-vegetarians also have pork and fish options to choose from in the grilled preparations, but vegetarians have a tough call at Orange County, with just one paneer shashlik in curry sauce, under the grilled dishes.

The restaurant also offers certain dishes with an Indian flavour. These include kababs, prawn curry, lamb roganjosh, chicken and paneer butter masala, all of which are served with paratha, roti, naan or rice, and are priced Rs. 150 and above.

The coffee shop of the hotel serves you the regular fare of sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, fish 'n' chips from 10.30 a.m., while the main menu is available at meal times.

What is cute and different in the snacks menu are the mini burgers (served as a set of three), which are innovatively titled Honey I Shrunk the Kids. The vegetarian ones are called Three Musketeers. Also available are a range of thick milkshakes and coffee.

Apart from Central American fare, Orange County goes completely Indian serving you lunch and dinner buffets, priced at Rs. 195 and Rs. 240, respectively. Though the food is tasty here and the chef incorporates variety, you find the buffet cramped into a corner of the restaurant. Also, the preparations are pretty much like any other hotel buffet.

Desserts at Orange County include a few sundaes and caramel custard, but one would rather pass over those and settle for the unbeatable and irresistible combination, brownies and vanilla ice cream, which seem to be quite popular.

Orange County is centrally located, and has easy access for the physically-challenged too. There is no valet parking, however.

The restaurant plans to have special celebrations and a new menu in July, for the American Independence Day.
