Chords & Notes

Neela Ponmane

HMV, Rs. 55.00

Another memorable album from the popular Classics' Revival series. Thirteen duets of the inimitable K.J.Jesudas have been handpicked, each one a precious gem by itself. Those who have chosen the songs for this collection have been careful to include almost all the leading female singers who have paired with Jesudas in what must be immortal duets of the language. Their original voices, digitally re-recorded gives these old numbers a new, fresh, tang. The lilting `Neela Ponmane... ' from the film `Nellu' and three other lively duets from Salil Chowdhary, `Mullapoothu... ' (Devarajan), `Raasaleelakku... .' (A.T.Ummer), `Karutha Penne... .' (Baburaj), `Akkarapachayile... ' (L.P.R.Varma),, `Sindhura kiranamayi... ' (M.K.Arjunan), `Aaraaro aariraro... ' (K.J.Joy) are some of the other lovely duets in this album. A collector's item indeed!

Njan Salper Ramankutty

Ragasudha Music, Rs. 50.00

The six songs from this new film somehow do not have the `Raveendran touch.' The focus is less on heavy orchestration and more on melody. The Jesudas solo `Madanapathakayil... ' with which the album opens is the pick of the lot. Surprisingly the duet `Kaliyaadi... ' (Biju Narayanan and Jyolsna) fall flat. However, it is the two songs from the film `Sthithi,' sung by Unni Menon and Sujatha, that really stand out. Unni Menon makes a definite impression as a music director and the solo `Oru Chembaneer... ' should see the comeback of this singer.

Evergreen Treasure

HMV, Rs. 40.00

A fine compilation of some of rare devotionals by P.Leela and S. Janaki. Their voices were so sweet, so mellifluous and every song they rendered had the stamp of their character. This album brings together some of the best of the devotionals that still retain a charm of its own. There are those traditional hymns and classics penned by Vayalar, Swamy Nirmalanandaji, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and others and some unforgettable tunes by veteran composers like V. Dakshinamurthy, B.A.Chidambaranath and Jaya-Vijaya. You have `Gokulapala Govinda... ,' `Ambike Chottanikkarayil... ,' `Srishti sthithi... .' (Leela) and `Ellam tharum... .' (Janaki) along with the less popular numbers, all in one album.
