Eye-catching crafts

THE RHYTHM of the shuttle moving on the loom, the chisel shaping stone and of hammer flattening silver and brass pervades every nook and corner of Orissa, giving shape to its distinct craft heritage.

Today, the crafts manifest in myriad forms, ranging from carved sandstone sculptures, pipliwork furnishing, patachitra wall hangings, dhokra ware, filigree work silver artefacts and ethnic textiles.

All these and much more are being showcased at an exhibition of Orissa handicrafts and handlooms currently on in the city.

While craftspersons demonstrate the intricacies of Ikkat weaves, tribal dhokra ware and plam leaf etchings, craft lovers can also choose from an arresting array of products.

Colourful applique work, garden umbrellas, cushion covers and bedspreads, dhokra work boxes and icons, patachitra wall hangings, cards and bookmark, and beautiful sandstone sculptures are some of the scene-stealers. Vignettes of tribal life are captured in a series of bright paintings.

The cynosure of all eyes are the elegant ikat saris with their distinct borders and pallus such as Sambhalpuris, Bomkais, tussars, katkis and much more. The selection is superb with attractive colour combinations. Ikat yardage, cushion covers and bedspreads are also available.

Jewellery aficianados can choose from a stunning range of filigree silver pieces from Puri.

The Orissa Crafts fair has been brought to Chennai by the Arts and crafts Exposition, an NGO from Bhubhaneshwar. The fair is on at C.P. Arts Centre, 1, Eldams Road, Alwarpet, till June 15.
