Beauty from the kitchen

Reach out for fruits and vegetables as safe and effective beauty aids


THOSE WHO look for everlasting youth and beauty have always had a strong desire to protect their beauty with something, which doesn't leave any side effects. Commonly available fruits and vegetables which can used as herbal cosmetics make wonderful beauty aids.

The pulp of banana used with or without yoghurt as facemask effectively rids the skin free of blemishes. Rub the slices of unripe banana over the hands for removing blemishes from them. Mix a few drops of coconut oil or a little honey to the pulp of ripe banana and make an excellent pack for the hands or face.

Carrots which are a rich source of vitamin A form an important ingredient in nourishing creams and face masks. Add milk or cream to the juice of a carrot and apply it before bathing. A paste of milk and carrot is effective for removing swelling around the eyes.

An important cause for dark circles around eyes is deficiency of iron. Supplement your diet with iron rich food. Squeezing lime over any vegetable makes the body absorb the iron in them. Juice of apple mixed with malt vinegar makes an excellent hair rinse. Make a paste of an apple and apply it as a face pack. Then wash off after 10-15 minutes. This pulp can also be put on the eyes if they are watery. Rub the peels of apple on your feet and hands for them to turn soft and glowing.

Lemon is a wonderful natural cleanser and cleanses the skin without disturbing its mantle. Lemon is also a natural astringent and helps to tighten the skin. It is used in creams, cleansers and masks. Collect orange peels and dry them in the sun. Grind and use as a facial mask. It is extremely good for toning the skin. Soak the orange peels in boiling water. Let it stand for overnight. Strain in the morning and use it as a cleanser.

Cucumber has cleansing, soothing and mild astringent effect on the skin. Grated cucumber with a little milk can be applied on the face for refreshing the skin. Wiping the skin with cucumber slices can benefit oily skins.

Tomato juice can be used as a toning lotion. Mix tomato juice with curd and use it as a face pack. It does wonders to a greasy skin. Cut tomato into two halves and rub them on the face in circular motion. Wash off after 10 to 15 minutes. Multani mitti powder mixed with tomato pulp makes an excellent paste, which closes the enlarged facial pores. Apply the paste made of one table spoon of lemon juice, two table spoons of cream and three tablespoons of tomato juice on the body half an hour before bathing. Blend one teaspoon of potato juice with one teaspoon of multani mitti together. Apply on the face and leave until it dries. Then wash off with lukewarm water. Rinse your face with cold water.

Remove the skin of 100 grams of grape fruit (ripe). Cut into small pieces. Put it in a blender. Add 250 grams of curd and mix. Refrigerate this paste for an hour and add half teaspoon of sodium benzoate. Then smear over the face and neck. Leave for 30 minutes or until you feel the pores of the skin tightening. Wash off with lukewarm water. It is very good for oily and sensitive skin.

Mash 3 Strawberries. Add 1 tablespoon of rose water to this pulp. Apply this mask on the face for 25 minutes. Finally rinse with cold water preceded by a wash with lukewarm water.

Take a piece of watermelon and place over the face and neck and relax, lying down for half an hour. Add the juice of half a lemon and refrigerate for 25 minutes for better results. This will cool, tighten and re-moisturise the skin.
