Sherbets and shakes

Prem Juice House is the ideal hub for `khus', `falsa' and more sherbets of the season.

WITH SCORCHING summers around, cold sherbets are what one looks forward to. Providing the much-required fluid base, the ingredients also have a cooling effect . The Falsa sherbet, made with falsa-- a tangy berry that ripens in March-May, is a drink popular with the twin cities folks during summer. If you want to have a sip of these exotic conventional juices, Prem Juice House and Vegetarian Restaurant is the place for you.

Tucked in the busy lane of Karimabad Colony, the place called Shop No.1, Chirag Ali Lane, is a popular landmark. "The visiting cards of the stores in the vicinity read `near, adjacent or opposite' Prem Juice House," says a regular client . What makes this place popular is the syrupy line-up the store offers.

There are the fresh fruit juices such as pineapple, mausambi and those made with seasonal fruits such as watermelon. But it is the thandai made with plenty of kaju, pista and badam, Badam milk shake, Rose lassi, and Strawberry milk shake with ice cream that takes the top slot . Among the offerings for the season, the special Mango Badam shake served with ice cream (Rs. 35) is well liked with the regulars. Fresh mango juice is used for this preparation. The Falsa sherbet, goes well with water and soda alike. Else you can try the hip Khus lime soda.

The ready to mix bottled sherbet concentrates are some of the popular buys, to fix your own sherbet at home. "Badam milk, thandai, pista and rose sherbets (Rs. 70) are ideal for milk shakes, lassi and kulfi. The pineapple, grape, orange, khus and falsa syrups can be served with water or soda. You have to add one part of the concentrate and fill up two thirds with milk or water respectively. The recipe for the sherbet concentrates has been passed down across generations. Many people buy the concentrates which are perfect for the season to offer the visitors who come home," says Madan Lal, the proprietor. And the place also offers take away juices in unique thermo cool packing instead of the conventional plastic covers.

And for some mouth-watering snacks to go with the sherbets, the place offers bite-sized sandwiches with layers of exotic chutney. Or you can settle for chole bhature, the Prem special sandwich and pav bhaji. The prices are pocket friendly. For instance the pav bhaji is priced at Rs. 25 and filling at the same time. And if you want to settle for a meal try from Hong Kong fried rice, Calcutta fried rice or Handi biryani with sabzi bahar, paneer butter masala, green salad and papad. The Vegetable Jaipuri is a popular grated vegetable preparation.
