Sweet n' spicy

All the chaat and sweet lovers can freak out at Gangotree. For a wide variety is served here.



JUST CHAATING: A wide choice of savouries and authentic Bengali sweets.

FOR THOSE who thought Bengalis were only fond of sweets, check out Gangotree (Plot No 245, Road No 36, Jubilee Hills) and taste the spice of Bengal. "It is lesser known, but Bengal also has a very distinct chaat culture," says Gangotree chef, Bappi - a native of Howrah.

The unpretentious chaat counter housed in a corner inside Qahwa coffee house compound has a wide choice of chatpata savouries and authentic Bengali sweets available in the menu. "The idea of starting Gangotree was to give Hyderabad something different to taste and munch. It has been eight months since we started and going by the swarming clientele, I feel my purpose has been served," says P. Pramod Reddy, managing partner, Gangotree. Among the discerning evening patrons of the chaat counter are, Venkatesh, Namrata Shirodhkar, and host of other celebrities in addition to the college crowd and families, from as far as Afzalgunj.

Why not? The menu is a unique mix of sweet `n' spice with some typical items like Rosogulla chaat, Jhaal muri, Doi Singara, Churmur chaat, Aloo chaat and Chanar toast, being incredibly popular.

The Rosogulla chaat is found nowhere in the world, claims chef Bappi. "It is made of sugarless rosogollas, paneer, chanachur, doi, six different types of chutney's and red chillies," he adds.

The chaat items are irresistibly priced between Rs. 7 and Rs. 25. Mineral water is used in the pani puri (to ensure hygiene and cleanliness, the chef adds) which comes for Rs. 15 a plate.

One should not miss on the Singaras (samosas) at Rs. 7 per piece that are quite different from the rest found across Hyderabad. Masala puri, Katori chaat and Doi valla are the other scrumptious delicacies that one should not miss. Among the Bengali sweets, one must try out, Chenna payas, Nauka vilas, Madhu bhog, Chomchom, Raj bhog, Ras malai, Lalmohan and Sandesh. Rosogollas and Mishti doi are of course, the perennial favourites. To buy by weight is relatively better.

There are other exotic sweets in addition to the Bengali platter, which are available only on orders.

Gangotree (Tel no: 31012870) ladles out a special assortment on Sundays, Franky roll (Rs. 30), Bombay Vada Pav (Rs. 25), Chhola Bhatura (Rs. 30) and hot Jalebis (Rs 16 for five pieces) in addition to the existing menu. "For the summer we have introduced Thandai," says Bappi.

How about that in the shade of the huge eucalyptus tree!
