Chocolates and more

Chocolate lovers can go berserk over the goodies from `Melting Moments'. Zarin Mistry has a range that just melts in the mouth.

"LIFE IS a box of chocolates," was a famous line by Tom Hanks in the film Forrest Gump. And 65-year-old Zarin Mistry can stand by that. First it was the training she imparted to girls from slums and the result was an impressive collection of saris, bedspreads and tablemats embellished with kantha work and lace work and decorative frames made using spices off the kitchen shelf— cardamom, cloves, wheat, rice husk and cinnamon, which have been a sell out at exhibitions organised at ITC Kakatiya Sheraton Hotel and Towers.

And now she and her girls are again in the news for the premium moulded home-made chocolates they manufacture. Some of her clients are Hotel Viceroy, Kakatiya Sheraton and Amrutha Castle besides others . "We recently made chocolates for a wedding gathering of 7,500 people in Ramoji Film City," says a warm and down-to-earth Zarin. Perhaps it is this pleasant demeanour of hers that adds sweetness to the chocolates she makes. And there are many varieties. Nut chocolates enriched with roasted almonds, cashew nuts, walnuts and raisins such as Almond Rocks and Cashew Rocks (for Rs. 450 a kilo or Rs. 45 for 100 gms, with 70-90 pieces per kilo), the Essence collection (Rs. 350)— Orange Delight, Butter Scotch, Mint, Coffee, Strawberry and more, Marzipans with almonds (Rs. 500), Soft Centres with a coconut filling, Choco Cracker— a marriage of chocolate and corn flakes, bars and assorted chocolates are some of them. Yet another made-to-order speciality is the liquor chocolate range— the popular rum n raisins and the heady whisky and brandy fillings besides biscuits coated with chocolate.

The chocolates, made with cocoa, butter and other imported ingredients, come in bitter and sweet, dark and light options, and in various shapes. " For Diwali we have diyas and lantern-shaped chocolates, Santa Claus, snow man and mittens for Christmas and hearts for Valentine's day. We also make theme-based chocolates on order such as landscape or the ocean theme with fishes, shells and more," says Zarin. Her birthday chocolates are popular as well— bunnies, teddies, alphabets and Mickey Mouse. "The wrapping is also important," she says. Golden, silver and multi-colour shimmer wrappers, attractive pouches, elegant baskets and crystal bowls hold the delicious chocolates, that just melt in the mouth— thus the name Melting Moments. "It was coined by my daughter who is currently in Australia," recollects Zarin.

In fact, "I started making chocolates for my family since my husband brought back boxes of imported chocolates after his overseas tours and I decided to learn to make them. I went to Mumbai for the course," she says. "I love to keep myself busy and at the same time help the needy by making them self-reliant," says Zarin as she makes yet another consignment of chocolates.
