A fair fare

With an attached pool parlour, Café Jam on Cenotaph Road seems to be one of the favourite hang out spots for the youngsters. As for the food — nothing different but reasonably priced.

ARE WE at the right place? This was the first thought that crossed the mind when we landed at Café Jam (ph: 25111003) on Cenotaph Road. Dim lighting, air thick with cigarette smoke, loud music and no other soul, except two youngsters smoking. The human chimneys were oblivious of our presence.

Even after settling down in a corner, my companion asked me, "Are you sure this is the place?" Suddenly from the dim interiors, a waiter appeared. We felt reassured... yes, the place is really open to the public and there is somebody to serve you. The amiable chap, who gave us the menu card, informed us that the pool table in the adjacent room was part of the establishment and for Rs. 40 you could shoot pool for an hour. That explained the catch line on the hoarding, `Everything under 1 roof.'

After a while, the `smokey joes' got the message and moved out with the ashtray. But the lack of windows, feasting mosquitoes and a gasping air conditioner didn't improve the situation much. Meanwhile, youngsters with streaked and gelled hair strolled in and out. Later a couple came and it felt good. Once our order came, the enthusiastic chef came to enquire if the food was all right.

At Café Jam, they have got a few things right. The food is quite nice. On the fast food front, they have a nice chicken burger, a big one at that for Rs.40. The Jam special foot long too is a decent buy at Rs.40. Pasta with mushroom and garlic (Rs.60) was a bit spicy, but still enjoyable. The salad, tomato with olives, mozzarella and olive oil too wasn't bad. The watermelon juice (Rs.25), strawberry milk shake (Rs.40) and mocha yoghurt (Rs.25) were `the good, the bad and the ugly' among the beverages.

The dessert, crepe lemon and honey (Rs.45) in spite of the missing lemony part, was okay.
