Lending a helping hand

It was a coming together of those who support the cause of the elderly. The `HelpAge Evening' saw generous contributions by corporates and individuals.

HELPAGE INDIA recently organised a `HelpAge Evening' for its project partners and supporters at Hotel Abu Palace on Poonamalee High Road, to commemorate the completion of 25 years.
Speaking on the occasion, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Inderjit Singh Dhillon, Director General, HelpAge India, said: "We are here, this evening, to support and increase the morale of each other. HelpAge India is just a link between the many agencies working for the cause and care of the elderly and the corporates who are willing to contribute towards this. It is only due to the coordination of the many agencies who are working for a similar cause and the contribution of many corporates that HelpAge India has come this far".
He said that the motto of the 25th year was active ageing. "We will send out the message that life does not stop at 60 and if you keep your body and mind actively employed, old age will always remain years away.
V. Narayanan, director, Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation, handed over a cheque for Rs. 6.5 lakhs towards purchasing of a new mobile medicare unit for Chennai. Asan Memorial School, Chennai, and Balmar & Lawrie also handed over cheques to HelpAge India.
HelpAge India in turn handed over a cheque for Rs. 6.5 lakhs to the Cancer Institute towards purchase of three Critical Care Monitors. It also contributed Rs. 2 lakhs to Vivekananda Kendra, for conducting 500 cataract operations at Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. The amount was sponsored by Indian Overseas Bank. Among other project approvals, St. Joseph's Home for the Aged, Coimbatore and St. Anthony's Home for the Aged, Trichy, received contributions. G.V. Ramakrishna, member, governing body, HelpAge India, presided over the function.
HelpAge India is a registered national level voluntary body, working nationwide for the betterment of the elderly. Headquartered in New Delhi, it operates 33 centres all over the country. Since its inception in 1978, this organisation has promoted 3084 projects to the tune of Rs. 180 crores.
