HYDERABAD IS second to none when it comes to the sales of second-hand cars. Nearly 52.4 percent of the cars zooming on the city roads, are seconds, thus making Hyderabad the leading second-hand car bazaar in India. Delhi trails closely behind with an estimated 49.6 percent second-hand vehicles on the run on its roads.
While Sunday is a holiday for most laid-back Hyderabadis, one particular breed of business that blooms to a full boom on this day is the second-hand car market. Auto consultants come alive on Sunday and there's a lot of movement in the bazaar.
Old cars are rolled in, polished and shined, for that new look and then a wait... for the gullible customer to arrive. And once he arrives, he is the king... cold drinks or chai as per his taste arrive in no time with snacks to go along with. All his requirements for a car are taken due care of - the make, model and the price; even the money is made available at his fingertips.
"It is indeed as easier said as done," says Arvind Jethwa, sitting on his new acquisition, Esteem LX - which he purchased a couple of seconds back from the second-hand car bazaar of `The Auto Links' at Begumpet.
"Owning a used car is easier than dreaming about it," says Ram, managing partner of `The Auto Links'. But usually doesn't a used car come with a lot of problem in every part - from the tyre to the bonnet to the wipers and the silencer? "If one has to buy trouble in the form of used cars, then why buy at all," reasons Ram.
"Things are not all the same they used to be. A consumer has become more demanding and one just cannot get away without giving him his money's worth. And particularly in Hyderabad where the second-hand car market is very strong, an auto consultant simply cannot cheat the buyer," he continues.
"We cannot even charge more on the used cars for sale. The prices have to be fixed in accordance with the prevailing market rates. Interested buyers can take the car out for a check up by their own mechanics and then bargain about the price," Ram adds.
The market has become so tight and competitive that buyers are now demanding free servicing and warranty on used cars. "We offer three free servicing for a period of one year on all our used cars on display. In addition, we even offer warranty on all parts for a period of one year after purchase," says Venkat of Varun Motors, explaining the `True Value' scheme. A new car also comes with more or less the same offers of service contract.
Maruti engineers stamp quality certificates on all cars before they are put on display at the `Used car mela' at Varun Motors on Sundays. "We only buy vehicles which are in good condition, are accident free and have AP registration with full documentation. After reconditioning and proper tuning at Maruti workshops, the stamp of quality is endorsed," adds Venkat.
Arshad Hayath of `Classic Cars' says, "We even arrange finance facilities up to 90 percent for our customers at very competitive rates." "Rest assured, if one goes through an auto consultant to buy a used car, very seldom do you come across anybody dissatisfied or getting a bad deal," he adds.
All you have to do is call up the consultant who will take the pain to find a problem-free car for you, as per your requirement. Pay the consultant's fee that ranges between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 only after you are satisfied.
Now that sure seems like a royal deal for the consumer on his way to the throne... the car, that is.
