Reaching out to one and all
After 43 years of dedicated service of teaching and administration, G. Lily Florence Alfred retires as the principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gachibowli, carrying with her accolades, awards and love of her students.
PERSEVERANCE, THY name is teacher. Our country is gifted with millions of these silent sculptors whose endless toil carve out Kalpana Chawlas, Arundhathi Roys and Narayana Murthys. The school is a home away from home. The young wayward minds here are brought into focus with the guiding lantern provided by teachers. Supervising and containing one and all with love and care is the head of the institution, the principal.
One such person who has made a whole lot of difference in many a tender mind is G. Lily Florence Alfred. This proficient principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gachibowli bade adieu to her beloved students and staff on February 28, as she retired from an illustrious career spanning 43 years. A native of Krishna district, Vuyyuru, the passion of learning and art of imparting knowledge grew and matured in her over the years. One of the factors that contributed to her assimilation of knowledge was her father who was a teacher himself.
Lily Alfred joined Kendriya Vidyalaya in 1966 and her transition from a teacher to the Principal came in 1984. She held the mantle of power as principal in different K.V schools, the last phase of which was in Gachibowli, from 1997 till 2003. Owing to her interest in co-curricular activities, she has contributed much to the field of fine arts, scouts and guides. She has held the post of the District Commissioner for Scouts. In the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan state rallies, Lily Alfred has led many of her teams as contingent leaders to Naseerabad, Mumbai, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad.
She has also conducted seven in-service courses for primary teachers and two for trained graduate teachers.
"Our principal is a skilled and knowledgeable teacher and very systematic in her work. Her versatile personality draws love and admiration from the children both as a person and a teacher," says senior teacher Parthasarathy of the English Department, K.V.
For her dedicated service, Lily Alfred has been honoured with the Ministry of HRD National Award in 2000. She received the award from the then President K.R Narayanan. She is also the recipient of the "Best Principal" award for 1999-2000. Other milestones include the "Incentive Award" by K.V Sangathan, New Delhi in 1995-96, "Long Service Award" by Bharat Scouts & Guides, New Delhi in 1997-98, "Best Active School Award" in 2002 and the "Avantika Samman Award" by the Directorate of Education, New Delhi in 1998-99 for exemplary contribution towards art, culture and service to humanity.
Dr. Aparna of Hindi Dept, K.V, recalls how the school principal's aim had always been towards the betterment of education and other activities in her school. Seconding her, Sunitha of the primary section, feels: "As a principal, Mrs. Alfred has always made an effort to reach out to all the students. An efficient administrator, she would always give valuable suggestions and guidance." Lily Alfred is a voracious reader whose interests harbour more on newspapers and books on great leaders. She idolises Swami Vivekananda and Gandhiji. Jayadeva's ashtapathi and Meera bhajans define her taste in music.
She strongly believes that humanity and service to mankind are her greatest assets. In future, she is open to the idea of being an academic consultant and wants to join the Open Troupe for Guides.
However, the last words belong to the staff and students of K.V who echo the loss of a principal so dedicated, affectionate, sincere and irreplaceable.
