Under a cool canopy


SHAMIANA IS a word that brings to mind the vibrant colours of festivity. And this is precisely the mood that the recently-opened restaurant, Shamiana, hopes to evoke in its customers.

The restaurant on K.H. Road specialises in traditional North Indian and Peshawari cuisine — one of the few of its kind in this part of the City. The restaurant offers its customers an array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes from the kadais and the tandoors of its kitchen.

Spread over a 3,000-square feet land, this restaurant easily scores over the rest of its kind in ambiance and décor. Done up in warm, earthy shades of rust and red, it has about it a traditional North Indian feel. Embroidered canopies decorate the ceiling and ethnic hangings adorn the walls. It even has a show kitchen, so that you can watch as the chefs churn out dishes.

The menu, although limited in variety, makes up in quality. It is also slightly partial to the non-vegetarians. Apart from the standard naan, roti, pickle, and papad items, it has quite a few innovative dishes in store for the adventurous. The sweet papaya pickle, served with namkeen and drinks, for example, is a tease to the taste buds. For starters, the paneer tikka and sabz makai seekh are must-haves, and the bharwan aloo is a potato lover's delight. The most popular dishes are its kachche gosht ki biryani and murgh seekh gilafee with chicken and cheese. On the vegetarian side of the menu, the chilli stuffed with corn and onion and the traditional Kashmiri dum aloo are worth tasting. Those sensitive to spices must watch out, though. Their special dal-e-Shamiana, full of cream, is the most sinfully delicious of them all.

The greatest relief in eating at Shamiana is that you need not worry about your food floating in oil. Quantity of each dish is reasonable. A regular meal for two could cost about Rs. 400. Although slightly on the higher side, you are, at least, assured of quality.

Shamiana has a bar attached, and gives you the option of dining on its terrace. The foliage and the Mangalore-tiled roofing give this area a cool, open air feel, and is lent out for corporate and social get-togethers. For a special family dining experience, you could also try the private eight-seater dining room, done up with high chairs, special cutlery, crockery, and glassware.

Says Aloke Totlani, who runs Shamiana: "Anybody who appreciates a good dining experience is our target customer." In keeping with the tradition, guests are offered sweet pan and the women a string of fresh jasmine, besides supari. Also look out for the special package your bill comes in.

Just off Richmond Road, Shamiana also has valet parking facility, and is open from noon to 3 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 11p.m.. You can call the restaurant on 51144867/8.
