Chinese in Chennai

The newly opened Chennai restaurant at Niloufer Road in Red Hills provides an interesting mix of North Indian, Chinese, Andhra and South Indian fare.



INVITING AMBIENCE: The minimal décor is appealing.

IF YOU thought you would find only sambhar in a Chennai restaurant, you are in for a gastronomic surprise. Here's this new vegetarian restaurant in town at Niloufer Road, Red Hills, which is named `Chennai' but serves Chinese. Of course, there's a lot of sambhar and idli, too. "Plus, Andhra meals and North Indian chatpatas," corrects the owner Mahmood Bin Salam.

But then why is it named Chennai restaurant? What's in a name... Chennai or Chinese is all the same in the food game. Nevertheless, this is what the owner has to say, "My grandfather was from Chennai." So?

"No, actually I started a Tiffin's centre, about eight years ago and named it Chennai. Going by the popularity of the place, I thought of extending it to the first floor, where people could come with their families, sit and enjoy good and wholesome food," Salam continues. With the public demand increasing, I plan to open another restaurant in Road No. 1, Banjara Hills, he adds.

With the Chennai restaurant having come up in an area that houses several hospitals and nursing homes, attenders of patients can now have a hearty fill, at the clean and spacious eatery, which has a long list of over a 100 delicacies, in its menu.

"Chennai restaurant (Tel no: 23320691) can seat about 80 people. We kept the offices and hospitals in mind when we started the place. But we are sure anybody who eats here once, will come back again for more," claims the restaurant manager.

Of course, anyone would, at least a foodie would. Apart from the long list of complimentary items that are given to all customers on availability, the ghee and cashew-rich food would make anyone an addict.

Amongst the speciality items are the 14 different types of dosas, button idli and vada, schezwan noodles and rice, baby corn soft/fried noodle, seven different types of Kaju curry, sham savera masala, garlic methi, aloo dum ka Punjabi, mushroom hundi, Shahjahani biryani, paneer kulcha, veg. Chilli milli and veg. Makhanwala, amongst a lengthy-line of other delectables. A full meal, which comes with ten varieties of curry, can be had for Rs 28.

One may find a few `unheard' names in the menu but the restaurant owner with over 20 years of experience behind him, claims: "the taste nor the price is regrettable. So, why not indulge in a gastronomic adventure."

Sweets are a speciality of the eating-place. One can enjoy, badam kheer, kaju kheer, kaddu kheer, honey moon speciale or chocolate sundae or go in for double-ka-meetha, gajar-halwa or qubbani-ka-meetha.

Check out the place for a taste of some ghee-rich fare with a surplus of pista and cashew. "Khilana hai to dil khol kar khilayenge," says Salam. And if you fear sheer indulgence, the Muscle Power gym on the second floor of the restaurant is there to take care.
