Hit for a six!
THE WORLD Cup and examination fever have hit the box-office badly. Last week's three releases "Khushi", "Satta" and "Baaz" have bombed miserably and the industry's estimated losses are said to be around Rs. 15 crores! The Valentine's Day releases have also not fared well. The less said about the Tamil film industry the better. Other than "Dhool", which is a blockbuster, all other films released this year have bombed.
In places like Madurai, Theni and other rural pockets, shows are getting cancelled due to the absence of audience. While in Ooty, the ramshackle Rohini theatre is showing World Cup matches live on the big screen using an LCD projector and charging Rs. 10 as admission fee! This week's big release in Chennai is the franchisee "Spy Kids-2", which is part serious, part spoof, starring Antonio Banderas and a bunch of kids. The only silver lining for the trade is India's pathetic performance, which is likely to drive the crowds back to the theatres!
