City's first taste of America

Indiana: When Uncle Sam's burger came home.

IN THE Eighties, when eating out was really not quite in, the late T.R. Varadrajan and Ashok Karumbaya opened Indiana Fast Foods. And Bangalore had its first "taste of America". Twenty-two years later, the restaurant is still a favourite of many and is always filled with both the young and old.

A landmark of sorts, situated in St. Patrick's Complex, at the intersection of Brigade Road and Residency Road, Indiana offers a sumptuous treat.

You can indulge in hotdogs in a choice of chicken, pork, and cheese, or chicken rolls, salami rolls, and vegetable rolls. Pizza, compared by the outlet's jet-setting customers to the best in Italy, are served with a spread of vegetable, cheese, mushroom, salami and so on.

One can even have a "cocktail" of every topping for Rs. 70. There are chicken, lamb, or fish burgers with cheese as the common addition.

At Indiana, you can have a regular burger, or, if you are up to it, a jumbo one. A meal deal combo, consisting of a chicken burger with fries and a soft drink, is yours for Rs. 75. If you are fond of meat, add Rs. 10 more and take a non-veg pizza instead.

The piece de resistance at Indiana is mayonnaise, creamy with a preternatural flavour. The chefs, using a secret recipe, prepare this sauce. Ice creams and thick shakes in exotic flavours are the other feathers in Indiana's cap. Priced between Rs. 15 and Rs. 20 (a cup or cone) these frozen delights have pieces of strawberry, fresh custard apple, pineapple, or coconut.

Indiana soon plans to add sundaes and grilled sandwiches on its menu. The "Indiana basket", an assorted dish of croquettes, rolls, samosa, and other delectable titbits will also be introduced in vegetarian and non-vegetarian combinations. Take your pick - Rs. 40 for vegetarian and Rs. 50 for non-vegetarian Rs.50 - for a treat straight out of the frying pan on to your plate.

"We keep our rates affordable because of the large student clientele," says Nitin M. Raje, General Manager of the restaurant.
