Artefacts from Andhra

The Lepakshi Heritage Collection Sale, currently on in the city, showcases the unique craft and textile traditions of Andhra Pradesh. On till January 6.

The varied crafts and textiles of Andhra Pradesh offer fascinating gift options at the Lepakshi Heritage Collection Sale, currently on at Sree Geeta Bhavan, 332, Avai Shanmugham Salai, Gopalapuram.

On display are exquisitely woven Gadhwal, Venkatagiri and Pochampalli saris in a wide spectrum of shades, Narsapur lace table linen, perforated leather lampshades, neem woodcarving and Warangal dhurries.

Ikkat rules supreme in the Andhra textile tradition and ikkat bedspreads and yardage compel attention.

The Chirala saris with lovely zari borders are impressive. The delicately detailed puppet leather wall hangings and lamp shades and neem wood panels come in varied themes. Adding colour to the walls are the fine Cherial paintings, celebrating vignettes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Lyrical in composition, the Cherial painting is a dying craft today.

Beautiful Udaigiri cutlery, Raja Rani dolls, pretty lightweight Kondapalli toys and Madanapalli pottery are the other attractions. Since Lepakshi has no showroom in the city, its exhibition, which ends on January 6, will prove to be an interesting craft experience for Chennai-ites.
