Light the candles!

With Christmas and New Year round the corner, the shops in the city are flooded with aromatic, perfumed and non-perfumed candles of various shapes, sizes and of course, price tags. People prefer decorative candles, as they look good. They can be used for candle light dinners and parties as well.

"Aromatic candles are just vanishing from the racks," say shopkeepers in the city. The therapeutic aspect is appealing.

Aromatic candles, which contain essential oils, are believed to have healing qualities. These qualities can be attributed to the presence of various herbs, essential oils obtained from plants, barks, fruits, and flowers such as lavender, geranium, ylang ylang and rose.

Aromatic candles, which use pure essential oils, are pretty expensive; the perfumed ones that are priced at Rs.100 to Rs. 200 do not contain pure essential oils.

L'Occitane, Shangri la, Forest Essential and Good Earth are the major brands of aromatic and scented candles available in the market. Aroma Magic, aromatic candles by Blossom Kochchar are expensive and are worth every cent you pay. "But not many clients want to shell out that kind of money for the branded candles. Actress Dimple Kapadia's `Faraway Tree' is very good but carries an expensive price tag," says Jaikumari Rajneesh, of Celebrations.

"We stock Auroville's aromatic candles and the rest come in from Mumbai and Bangalore," she adds. Birthday candles include magic candles (Rs. 20 for a 10-piece set), musical candles (Rs.70 for a set containing 60 pieces), and sparkler candles. Light the wick of a musical candle and it plays "Happy B'day to You". An aromatic oil dish fixed on a decorative candle depicting sunbirds is priced at Rs. 270.
