Breast cancer

HORMONE REPLACEMENT Therapy causes more life-threatening illnesses than it prevents, according to a British study . Cancer Research U.K., which carried out the analysis, found that women on HRT had lower risks of bowel cancer and hip fractures, but an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and blood clots on the lungs. For every 1,000 women in their 50s, five years of HRT is linked to four extra cases . Around six million women take HRT every year to alleviate side effects of the menopause. These include hot flushes, night sweats, depression, insomnia, irritability and loss of sex drive. The new review, in the journal, The Lancet, included information from four random trials on 20,000 postmenopausal women who had taken HRT.
