`Desi' meets `videshi'

`Bollywood Hollywood' has an interesting sound track. Sandeep Chowta proves his versatility by projecting the best music influences.

`Bend It Like Beckham', `Mitr My Friend', `American Desi', `The Guru' - the trend of these new-generation cult movies with storylines based on India abroad is surely the `in' thing of the season. Light satirical comedies reflecting the desi v/s videshi trends and culture have never been more successful. And with these films, comes a niche form of music - often influences of trance and fusion.
The latest addition to the hatke movie bandwagon is called `Bollywood Hollywood'. Written and directed by Deepa Mehta (of `Fire' and `1947-Earth' fame), the movie stars Rahul Khanna, Lisa Ray and Moushumi Chatterjee in the main roles.
Promising to impress the critics and the janta alike, `Bollywood Hollywood' is one of the early releases in the coming year. The sound track of the film is unique in many respects. Music by Sandeep Chowta (of `Viva' fame) proves his versatility by projecting the best music influences of both worlds as fusion forms the backdrop of the entire album.
The first track, which initially catches your attention, is Dil kabootar khana hai, with some hilarious lyrics by Ajay Virmani and Jaideep Sahni. The energetic vocals of Sonu Nigam, combined with the electronic punk sounds fused with the guitars and the flutes, will make sure it soars across the music charts. Beginning with Everybody on the dance floor and a verse that says Raat ko sapne jagte hain, the track, DJ, VJ lagte hain is reflective of the interests and passions of youth. This song is all set to be the latest anthem among college-goers; `Dil Chahta Hai' is peanuts in comparison.
In Sona sona roop hai, we hear a never before combination of Sonu Nigam and Alisha Chinoy in a Bhangra-musical track. With solid bhangra beats and some electric guitar thrown in, this one is impressive as well.
But, the best track in the album is If the shoe fits, which begins with Lakshmi sahasranamam, set against the background of the guitar, and goes on to expose the unique talent of Sunitha Sarathy in crooning an all-English song, complete with the accent and the voice. It reminds you of Moulin Rouge.
The evergreen classic, Chin chin choo, is featured in a funky `hinglish' version, and this time the vocalist is male, who again, sings the song in a very `angrezi' style.
Krishna hare is a bhajan and has both a male and a female version while Rang rang is fast and folksy and has a tint of bhangra as well. Sandeep does some terrific fusion this time. Way to go, Sandeep `bhai'.
