Smooth sailing

Are you totally unsure within while you are at social gatherings or official meetings?
|
MOST PEOPLE are constantly put in situations where they `behave like ducks'. You know how `they' look, so calm sailing over the water surface while paddling like crazy under water? In many social and business situations, that is exactly how people feel. Calm and composed on the outside and completely unsure inside. So here are a few questions that will be of interest.
I am planning to change my job and will start attending interviews soon. How should I handle the question of why I am leaving my present employer?
It really depends on why you are leaving the organisation. If it is part of your career growth plan, you can say so. That gives a positive impression that you are someone who is serious about your career achievement and growth. But if you are leaving because of a less than ideal or an uncomfortable situation with your peers, superiors or the business itself, please refrain from pouring out your grievances and complaints at the interview. That will make you appear whiny, petty, and unprofessional. It will also make the interviewer wonder - at best, your level of loyalty and at worst, the part played by you in creating the uncomfortable situation. Be tactful and diplomatic and always stress the positive and keep the focus on where you are headed and your strengths and what you can do for the new organisation.
I handle all the telephone calls coming in. I want to be organised about getting messages right to the right people. Help!
I really applaud you for taking the initiative to do this. It is a pity that businesses are not giving the importance they should in training the employees in the proper way to handle telephone calls. When it comes to taking messages, please make sure that you are writing all the information down. Don't put it all to memory. You will never remember it all. Then you keep one copy and give the recipient of the message one copy. This way any questions or clarifications that might come up later, can be clarified. Write down, the name and telephone number, message if any, the best time to call back at this number and the date and time. A business call should be returned as soon as possible or definitely by the end of that day.
