Autism

Childhood developmental disorders such as Autism, and Asperger syndrome appear to be widespread. Researchers in Britain, surveying more than 15,000 children between the ages of two and six, found that the rate of these `pervasive developmental disorders' was 62.6 per 10,000 children.

Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder -- conditions impair a child's social and cognitive skills.

Autism, a developmental disorder characterized by severe communication, interaction and behavioural problems, is usually diagnosed in toddlers aged 18-30 months and disproportionately affects boys.
