EATING OUT can be a thrilling experience if the ambience in the restaurant imparts a feel-good factor. This pleasant feeling will overcome you the moment you step in at New Delhi's TGI Friday, the eating outlet which promises to give you not just the American palate but also creates an illusion of being inside Cowboy's territory. Incidentally, there are two branches of this American food chain -- the Vasant Vihar restaurant opened in mid `90s while the Connaught Place one opened up its shutters about two years ago. The fancy furnishing, made of polished teak and brass with walls littered with memorabilia - a Westerner, saxophone and paraphernalia like Tiffany lamps, red and white stripes, the racing scull suspended from the ceiling and propeller over the bar gives you a feeling of déjà vu.

So that its clientele don't get bored eating out same type of dishes day in and day out, TGI Friday wants to break the monotony by introducing new theme dishes of mouth-watering specialities from its vast menu of international cuisines. Now it brings Pasta Americana - the Mexican flavours will give you an extraordinary culinary experience. All the Pastas - Linguine, Fettuccine and Penne - have been flown in from abroad while the sauces have been prepared indigenously. All the dishes have been priced at Rs. 200.

Chicken Pasta, which seems to be the favourite dish of most customers might get retained as a permanent menu item. Of all the dishes this one is really the dish of the day, probably this has to do with the fact that its unique preparation jells with the Indian taste buds. Chicken is first marinated in garlic, after which vinegar, black pepper and salad oil are poured into it. While eating Pastas the uninitiated need to get tips from the garcon or the ever-helpful manager, Phani Kumar.

The elaborate menu to tickle all kinds of palate includes Mexican, Pastas, Cajun, Pizzas and TGI Friday's speciality foods. Balsamic Pork - pork tenderloin in a balsamic Cracked Pepper Marinate tossed with over roasted tomato, wilted spinach, sautéed onion and Pan juices - is prepared with ubiquitous garlic butter and then pieces of finely chopped pork are mixed into it. You eat it in accompaniment with Busshette - a special kind of bread. Even if you find Indian gammon uneatable you needn't worry on that score as freshly purchased pork from the abattoir goes into a cauldron where it is professionally boiled to get rid of germs.

One tries the Chilli and Garlic Shrimp. The fluffy pieces of shrimps are excellently sautéed with garlic, chillies, fried capers and diced tomato. Some portion of Grilled Fish with Radish is really meant for food connoisseurs or those who have a taste for astronomical recipes. Chunks of peppered, grilled fish over Linguine are variegated with tomatoes and red and green peppers in a cream sauce spiked with radish. If you are a hearty non-vegetarian then you have to try more dish as fish, pork and chicken -- depending on the dish that you have ordered -- are given in small bits. The emphasis is more on the pastas.
