FROM SCRATCH: DJs Steve, Manoj and Yogi on the console.
ONE IS a Psy-trance aficionado and the other a Deep house buff and together they set the floor on fireat one of the noted discothèques in the country and the happening pub of Mumbai, the apt `Fire `n' Ice'. They are the in-sync twosome DJs Steve and Manoj who brought over the heat to the twin cities at the Kingfisher Rythmania held at Treasure Island over the weekend.
It was the pulsating Pyaar do of the Jaanbaaz fame to the Jawan-e- janeman remixed and dished out to the crowd, followed by Shakira and the techno beats and more beats-a jugalbandi with the percussion guru Sivamani. With a tad jazz mix at the console, the music was different, observed the crowd at the gig. It was a progression through various genres of music--a taste of the Fire `n' Ice tempo. "We play different genres across the week. Thus it is a hip-hop night followed by a trance, then disco and the commercial or mainstream music a.k.a. J Lo and Shakira. Mumbai starts partying at 12:30 a.m. and the gig goes on till the early hours of the morning," says Steve. Thus their music changes tempo across the hours of the night and with the pulse of the crowd. "The music depends on the crowd, the type of music they would like to let their hair down to," says Manoj.
The duo has been together at the console since the past five years. And what brought them together was a chance meeting at a discotheque and their common love of music. And the ever-partying metro was an encouraging hub - enough to get them started on the consoles professionally. "Mumbai has a happening party culture. You also have the professional deejaying schools where one can learn the art. But essentially you need to have a music background to be a successful DJ," says Steve.
FUSION FEVER: Percussionist Sivamani with DJs Steve and Yogi.
Steve and Manoj are coming up with their album in December. "It includes some original compositions," says Manoj.
And it sure would be a breather for music buffs in the present times of remixes. The crowd at the TI gig got to know some Sivamani music but felt it was out of place, when all they wanted to do was a jig with the music, the Fire `n' Ice way.
