THEY ARE hot and happening. And we are not talking about the balmy frames on the silver screen. It is the Hot Chips outlet round the corner that brings you paper thin wafers of crisp potato chips. "The chips we serve are fresh piping hot, thus the name," says the vendor at the Sri Sai Ram Hot Chips at Srinagar Colony. Ditto say the consumers who frequent these outlets to pack up chips. "They are fresh and made with refined oil," says Usha Koka, who is a regular shopper at the Sri Sai Krishna Hot Chips outlet at Banjara Hills. The oil used for frying is not recycled. What makes the chips stand out is the use of the hybrid potatoes shipped from Bangalore. With over 80 shops in the twin cities in a span of two years, Hot Chips has been popular especially for the tempting potato chips that are priced at Rs.120 per kilo. Other offerings that are popular with the consumers are the mint, ginger and the Nendram banana chips. Other varieties on offer are potato onion rings, tapioca and jack fruit chips. "The bitter gourd chips are ideal for diabetes patients," says M A Murthy, of Sai Ram Hot Chips and Condiments, Shivam Road.
One of the pioneers in this business, he has over 10 outlets in the twin cities today. Travelling between Bangalore and Hyderabad , he finds that Hot Chips has become a buzzword in the markets of Mysore, Bangalore and Chennai.
"Hot Chips is a popular name in south India," seconds Murugan from Chennai, at Sri Sai Ram Hot Chips, Sri Krishna Nagar. Thus the offerings are typically south Indian with an exhaustive range of murukulu, ariselu, chegodi, pappu chekkalu and kajjikailu, apart from the rawa laddu and pineapple halwa.
SLICE OFF: The chips are fresh and fried in refined oil.
The outlets seem a good alternative for the traditional homemade sweetmeat; the preparation of which otherwise would need planning and pinching some time off hectic schedules.
For now, the popular and mushrooming Hot Chips outlets are manna to many weary office-goers on their way home.
