A tasty platter

The Ming Court at Adyar offers a variety fare of Thai, Malay and Singaporean cuisines.

A GOLDEN era, that's what the Ming dynasty gave the Chinese, peace and prosperity, art and architecture. Thus, a name like Ming Court can raise expectations.

The restaurant on the First Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, is actually the resurrection of Rasa Sayang, the Southeast Asian joint. Ming Court (ph: 7116185) has inherited the décor from the previous occupant. So the ambience is untouched by any courtly grandeur.

The menu has a fair share of Thai, Malay and Singaporean cuisines. Despite the presence of a cauliflower Manchurian, the food is neither Indo-Chinese nor is it quite the royal fare as touted.

The meal opened on a lovely note with roasted chicken dumplings (Rs.130). This wrap-less steamed chicken dim sum had a surprise egg centre. But there was no roasting involved at any point.

The vegetarian starter, crispy fried mushroom, with batter, was passable. The vegetable garlic soup (Rs.40) was tasty. Clear and with a strong hint of garlic, it delivered what was promised. The other dish that did the same was My Chong siya (Rs.125), prawns in chef's special sauce. It was yummy. Even more expensive than the prawn was the beef, Bulgogi (Rs.140). A stir-fry with spring onions and celery the dish did not justify the price.

The chicken, sapo (Rs.130) came to the table on a burner. It reminded one of the Mongolian hot pot equipment except that the customers don't get to choose the ingredients or cook. Take away the flame, Sapo is like any Chinese chicken dish, batter fried chicken in a gravy. Tofu celery (Rs.80), another stir-fry, was tasty.

In the dessert section, honey sea coconut comes with a price tag of Rs.100. It is tender coconut and honeyed palmyra fruit (`nongu' in Tamil), served on a bed of ice. Obviously, the flavoured palmyra fruit is imported. But with all that plain ice, it is hard to get away from the watery taste. The tried and tested date pancake is a better choice. The other icy offering, Ice kachang (Rs.60), is pleasant.
