Businessman with a mission

The birth centenary of the business legend, AMM Murugappa Chettiar, was celebrated on September 29.

AMM MURUGAPPA Chettiar... the name paints a picture of a man with a vision, a man who created a business conglomerate with enduring values.

The first Indian to be elected president of the Madras Chamber of Commerce, and president of FICCI from 1960-61, AMM had a long and distinguished record of service to both industry and commerce.

Brought up in an orthodox family, he broke away from tradition to set up a business house that to this day spells success.

With the advent of World War II came the industrial awakening in India and AMM decided to venture into diverse businesses. This resulted in the establishment of Tube Investments of India Ltd. in collaboration with British company, Tube Investments Ltd. AMM along with his friend, philosopher and guide, Sir A. Ramaswamy, was the pioneer who brought the common man's vehicle, the bicycle, to India. AMM was on various public bodies of the country and was appointed on several committees.

AMM's family, whose businesses are today run by the third and fourth generations, was last year conferred "The Distinguished Family" award by the IMD Lausanne, a rare recognition indeed for a business family from Asia.

The birth centenary of the visionary was observed on September 29, 2002.
