Design spell

Chennai's fashion aficionados can now have a taste of trends sweeping other metros, with Studio Saks all set to unravel a new collection in September.

Oh! There is so much happening in the other metros. But the fashion scene here is dismal... That's the common grouse of fashion aficionados in the city. With style sense penetrating the mass psyche like never before can Chennai lag behind for want of chic labels that come with reasonable price tags?

Well... Studio Saks has the answer. The fashion house at Gopalapuram will soon bring to Chennai a host of trendy labels from various fashion destinations in the country. The market-driven labels that fuse style and substance will come with attractive pricing too to cater for the city's smart shoppers.

Studio Saks that was invited as a "trade buyer" to the recently concluded Lakme India Fashion Week at New Delhi had spotted some young talent there after "keenly evaluating their portfolios". In a show in September, it will unravel the collections of Swapan and Seema, Deepika Govind, Aparna Chandra, Nikhil and Shantanu among others. And as for the lines, they will range from funky styles to highly embellished creations for the trousseau.

Bangalore-based designer, Deepika Govind will present sleek and sensual silhouettes in fluid fabrics that breathe. The collection will comprise Indo-Westerns priced Rs. 2,500 onwards. Ethnicity being their forte, Swapan and Seema of Kolkata have conjured up a line of vibrant ghagras perfect for the trousseau (Rs. 15,000 onwards). While Nikhil and Shantanu's collection will reflect their passion for fusion, Aparna Chandra's will be a Wild West line.

Says Upasana Asrani of Studio Saks, "Bringing these designers to the city is part of our endeavour to encourage fresh talent and give Chennai-ites an idea of the trends sweeping other metros."

For those who can't wait till September for the mega show, the fashion house has a chic line of Western separates and ethnic creations in fabrics ranging from sheer to silk. Sid Tytler (New York), Anisha Gupta, Magnetic Rags, Gunjan Arora and Wild Orchid are some of the labels on display, besides accessories by Bhawna and Prarthana.
