Festive flavours

IT'S A TIME for celebration in God's own country. The people of Kerala remember Lord Mahabali during Onam and accord him a symbolic welcome with flowers and a sumptuous feast. The festive spirit has caught on in cosmopolitan Chennai too, with several hotels serving a traditional Onam banquet.

At Ahaar, the restaurant at The Residency, 49, G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar (ph: 8253434), you can enjoy an amazing variety of Kerala dishes at a lunch or dinner buffet. Puliseri, avail, thoran, olan, pazhanarukku, kalan, varatha uperi, ada pradhaman... it's truly Kerala on a platter! Right from a traditional welcome with a pookalam, the interior depict a Kerala home with thoranams, flowers et al. The staff, dressed Kerala-style, add an authentic touch.

Step into Navaratna at Le Royal Meridien any day from August 21 to 30 at 7.30 p.m. to savour the mouth-watering festive cuisine of Kerala from payasam to crisp chips. Call 2314343 for details.

Copper Point at GRT Grand Days, 120 Thyagaraya Road, Pondy Bazaar, will also wear a festive look on August 20 and 21. One can relish an Onam buffet, priced Rs. 300, and also enjoy Mohiniattom, and folk forms such as Kaikottikali and Maplah dance performances between 8.00 p.m. and 9 p.m. on both the days. The buffet service is from 7.30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on August 20 and 21 and on August 21 from 12.30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
