Savour the Orient

`A taste of the Far-East', an on-going food festival at Cafe Roulette, provides a glimpse of the varied cuisines from some of the countries.

THE ORIENT is associated with the mystic and exotic as compared to the Occident. This notion stretches to the cuisines as well. Although rice, noodles and seafood are the main staple of most of the countries in the Far East, each country has a distinct cuisine. One is used to the `Chinese' (most of it is Indianised to suit the Indian palate) flavours thanks to the boom in Chinese restaurants. The cuisines of other countries except Thailand are not familiar to many in the twin cities. Cafe Roulette (R.K.Plaza, Punjagutta. Tel: 3400201, 6596979) which brings world cuisines on a platter is now providing a `Taste of the Orient'. This food festival featuring Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, Chinese and Japanese cuisines is on till the end of July.

Cafe Roulette has specialised in serving Italian, Mexican and Indian food. The current festival showcases some of the normal and exotic cuisines of the Far East. "Our customers wanted Oriental stuff and we decided to offer them a state of the Orient in a more cosmopolitan way,'' says Madhav Koneru. Traditional ingredients are used to impart the authentic flavours. "The recipes have been adapted and worked on till we were satisfied with the taste,'' adds Madhav. A Chinese chef with experience of Oriental cooking will be dishing out the delicacies. Since Oriental food is primarily non-veg with a predominance of sea food, the range for veggies is limited.

While soups are the normal ones, it is from the starters that one can embark on a culinary journey of the Orient. Sesame prawn toast, spring rolls with dipping sauce (China), Chicken cakes with teriyaki sauce, Japanese burgers, Yakitori chicken kebabs, tuna kebabs (Japan), lamb satay (Malaysia) and peanut fritters (Indonesia) set your taste buds rolling.


RICE SPICE: The main course garnished with veggies or meat.

For the main course a dish along with rice or noodles (the regular ones people are used to) with some garnishes like vegetables is pre-plated in line with the restaurant's practice. Every week there will be about eight main course dishes to choose from which will be changed in the subsequent weeks. So there are the coconut milk-based curries (chicken with coconut milk, curried prawns in coconut milk from Indonesia and vegetables in coconut milk) Chinese favourites like Mandarin fish, sweet n sour fish, shredded lamb in ginger-garlic sauce and spinach in brown bean sauce, Thai specialities like deep fried lamb with shredded cabbage and stir fried lamb with onions and the well-known nasi goreng from Indonesia. Care has been taken to use traditional ingredients like galangal, kafir lime and lemon grass for Thai curries and miso paste for Japanese food besides the soya bean sauce and star anise for Chinese and Japanese food to impart the authentic taste.

Go ahead and savour the Far-East. Cafe Roulette will also be starting home delivery (from the main menu) for certain areas like Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Srinagar Colony, Somajiguda and Begumpet.
