Chic jewellery in sleek designs

If one is looking for trendy, classy, lightweight jewellery, Oyzterbay is the place to check out.

ALTHOUGH BANGALORE cannot really claim to be the fashion capital of the country, it certainly is an ace in catching up on the latest jewellery trends, despite the City's inclination for traditional South Indian designs.

While a variety of trendy costume jewellery is available in exclusive shops and upmarket shopping areas, contemporary and sleek jewellery in gold, especially in unorthodox designs, is not easy to come by.

Oyzterbay is one such outlet on Commercial Street that caters to the small but growing segment of clientele wanting to sport trendy and light jewellery even as it has the stamp of tradition and acceptance, made as it is of gold.

Oyzterbay, which set up shop less than two years ago, aspiring to establish itself as a design leader in contemporary jewellery, seems to be a success story if the demand for its jewellery is any indication. It is not merely the eye-catching display that is appealing - jewellery at Oyzterbay, ranging from 18, 22, and 24 carat, and sterling silver, is delicate, pleasantly appealing, and light and uncomplicated in appearance.

True, it is distinct from the usual gold jewellery stocked in standard jewellery showrooms, different even from even contemporary jewellery offered by traditional jewellery houses trying to cater to the trend. Where Oyzterbay scores is in its simple and refreshing designs and affordability. As Priyadarshi Mohapatra, Marketing Manager, says: "We began by selecting a completely different reach - everyday jewellery for the working woman and jewellery for the youth. We felt that jewellery should be brought out of the locker. So we positioned (it) to accessorise the dress of the young, college-going crowd, which otherwise sported junk jewellery.

The second segment was the working woman for whom we sought to build a wardrobe of jewellery by making it affordable, so that she could pick up pieces regularly."

Oyzterbay later extended the same brand values to diamonds too, the idea being to target a niche market. This perhaps is the mark of difference between Oyzterbay and other players.

As customers invariably expect something different every so often from such an outlet, Oyzterbay keeps refurbishing its collection every few months, says Mr. Mohapatra. Seasonal collections, keeping in mind international trends, are one way of offering something exclusive to clients.

Right now, the jewellery house is offering an Oyzterbay Summer 2002 collection of pendants, earrings and finger rings with natural gemstones in fancy cuts set in white gold, as white gold is evolving as a fashion statement the world over.

It is a limited collection with a mere 50 designs, with the prices ranging from Rs. 900 to Rs. 5,000. Srinivas Reddy, design head of Oyzterbay, says the collection has been inspired by summer blossoms. "Bangalore is a riot of colours in summer, with its profusion of flowering trees. The contextual colour and vibrancy have been captured through gemstones arranged in a totally modern manner, with minimalist designs. It is a simple arrangement of colour on white gold - the metal that has been signalled as `in' by even the World Gold Council."

The jewellery collection in the outlet comprises over 1,250 pieces that are contemporary as well as classical, with pendants, earrings, finger rings, bracelets, neckwear, and chains forming its portfolio.

Although jewellery in gold and sterling silver embellished with natural gemstones is representative of Oyzterbay, it has another offering - Your First Diamond - a complete range of diamond jewellery set in white, pink, and yellow gold.

The striking feature of the collection is its attractive pricing, which starts from Rs. 500.

The most expensive piece at the outlet does not exceed Rs. 12,000. Oyzterbay jewellery is available in 14 exclusive outlets in13 cities across the country, and its jewellery can also be bought online in the web store www.oyzterbay.com.

If contemporary, lightweight jewellery, which does not look like artificial jewellery and is well designed, is what one wants, then Oyzterbay is where one should head for.

The outlet can be contacted on 5527112.
