Pocket-friendly paintings

The mediums of expression are many... terracotta, wood, oil, watercolours and metal. The Affordable Art exhibition on at Vinyasa Gallery till June 25, has something for everyone...

A GENERAL feeling among the public is that art is something they cannot understand, leave alone buy it. It is to correct the misconception that Vinyasa Art Gallery has been organising "Affordable Art" annually. On show are paintings of every kind... figures of deities in the traditional style or adapted to the modern idiom, figurative works and so on.

As for the mediums, one can choose from oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels, collage, etching and computer art. The paintings come in reasonable sizes. The abstract watercolours by K. Srinivasan are interesting.

There are sculptures too in different mediums and styles, be it creations of senior and well-known artists such as Alphonso, Muralidharan, Achuthan Kudallur, Viswam and Asma Menon or up and coming artists such as Ramachandran, Anamika, Rama Suresh and Alagesan. Many artists have created works especially for this show.

As for the prices, they range from Rs. 330 to Rs. 5,000. Also available are prints of Raja Ravi Varma, M.F. Husain, Jamini Roy, N.S. Bendre, Manjit Bawa and Raza at reasonable prices.

Though as craft items they may not belong here, one can't help admiring the cardboard jars made by Abhimanyu; the elegantly shaped jars are pleasing, painted in arresting hues, with attractive designs. Similarly mugs, pen-holders and lamp shades made of wood and terracotta by Santhanakrishnan, also attract attention.

The exhibition is on till June 25.
