For the piquant palate

If your tastebuds are craving for Andhra food and you are looking out for a new place to eat then `Coastal Spice' is where you should go. This restaurant also serves north-Indian, Continental and Chinese.


SPICE IT UP: Indulge in a variety of cuisines.

THE RISING popularity of Andhra cuisine can be gauged by the burgeoning restaurants. It is today cool to eat natu kodi pulusu, gongura mamsam, chapa pulusu, peethala iguru, and a host of other igurus, pulusus, kooras and vepudus. With many restaurants set up for specially serving Andhra food, the gourmet has a range to choose from. Now there is another restaurant in the city to cater to lovers of Andhra particularly coastal Andhra food. `Coastal Spice' - the name says it all. Do not mistake it to be a totally Andhra restaurant. It is also a multi-cuisine eatery where north Indian (tandoor), chinese and a few continental dishes are served. Located in Punjagutta, besides Pavani Plaza (tel: 3400552, 6596237), this 102-seater restaurant opened recently, is spread over many rooms. Those who want special alcoves can get it and families can also find a separate place to create the noise they want.

The reason behind opening such a venture according to V.R. Mohan Rao is "to serve traditional and authentic food." For this purpose, most of the ingredients including some of the seafood are procured from the coastal areas. Cooks from Krishna district and assistants from Nellore ensure the authenticity of the taste. The fare, as the title suggests, is primarily non-vegetarian (barring the veg thalis) in the Andhra section. So there are igurus, pulusus, vepudus of meat, chicken, fish, prawns and crab. These dishes can be had with steamed (steemed as it is in the menu card) rice or perhaps with jonna roti or with a variety of naans and rotis according to the palate. Can any restaurant exist without serving the ubiquitous biryani? Coastal Spice is not far behind and serves the mutton (including a special mutton one), chicken and prawns besides veg and egg ones. There are two plated meals - the thalis (Andhra traditional thali for Rs. 45 and Coastal spice special executive thali for Rs. 120). The executive thali is really special for it has a number of items - a mix of north Indian and south Indian). The other fare is the standard one available in most restaurants - the soups (Continental and Chinese), starters (Spring rolls, Chicken drumsticks, wings and the like and Manchuria, spring rolls and gold coin for the veggies), kebabs and tikkas (veg and non-veg) besides the veg and non-veg Chinese, Continental and north-Indian fare comprising the regular dishes. While having the meal do not be worried about the drinking water for it is mineral water (which is complimentary).

On the anvil are home delivery (to be introduced in a few days) and a food mela sometime next month. "We plan to have a month-long mela where numerous varieties of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food will be available. The menu is being worked out and this will be held once a year", says Mohan Rao. Those of you staying in the radius of three-four kilometres can avail of home delivery.

If you are in the mood to experiment, check out this new restaurant and you surely won't have a hole in your purse.

One last line - could the management consider removing the figures of goat, chicken, crabs and prawns from the menu? It may not be welcomed by many.
