Home-made delicacies

Samosas, cakes and desserts... all home made? That is what Pantry Car, a party-catering unit, specialises in.

USHA CHANDRAKUMAR and Laila Stefanos have a passion for cooking. That saw the two of them start Pantry Car, a venture for party catering, some 15 years ago.

"Our invest was nil, just some aluminium baking trays," says Usha. "Laila loves baking. I am good at other dishes," she adds. They complement each other very well.

Their domestic schedule is in no way disturbed because of their venture. Each one cooks certain dishes at her home and has the order packed and sent to the client. Bakes, pastas and desserts are meant to serve up to 10 people.

Samosas, spring rolls, sandwiches, pies and moussaka are charged per piece, while cookies and cakes are priced per kg. The range offered is scrumptious... choco chip, date and nut, butter oatmeal, lemon tart, butterscotch tart, vanilla, chocolate and eggless cakes.

The desserts consist of soufflés — vanilla with nuts and chocolate sauce, with cake/biscuit base, orange, caramel, black forest, gateau, cheesecake and trifle. They cost between Rs. 150 and Rs. 500.

Crisp patti samosas and spring rolls are Pantry Car's specialities, while the brownies are a must for their regular customers.

The fried eats are also sold in frozen packs. All you need to do is fry them.

Usha and Laila enjoy what they do. It gives them a great sense of satisfaction.

And what's more, they make a profit without compromising on the home front. It is a success story of a rare kind.

Usha Chandrakumar can be contacted at 8275341 and Laila Stefanos, at 6266512.
