Lines of style

The exhibition and sale of Lina Tipnis' spring-summer collection at Elahe and Oorja promises to be a treat for the fashion conscious.

SEVERAL YEARS ago Lina Tipnis began a voyage - one that has today become a legend in the arena of design. Who could imagine that this lady would eventually dress royalty, elite and commoners not only in India but also abroad in countries like UK, Dubai and the US?

Today, Linarika Designs has grown into a large workshop with an army of artisans pouring their genre of traditionalism on to the warp and weft of the fashion conscious. Here is a style that borrows from the earth and creates look that is traditional in soul and modern in substance.

The styles reflect some of the ancient traditions of Indian craftsmanship in a contemporary vocabulary. Lina Tipnis' deep understanding of antique and contemporary designs and the innovative use of traditional crafts come from her understanding of the art and history of the country. Her outfits stand out as unique slices of couture. These absolute must have for the slaves of style are on sale and display at Elahe and Oorja from March 25 to 30.

The spring-summer collection embodies a look for the woman who looks for an extra zing in her dress style. Innovating on cuts and working with the interplay of sheer and shine, Lina has used floral motifs, vibrant, coloured sequins, classic appliqués and plastic trims in various shapes to highlight her silhouette. She has worked more on detailing and strategically placed embellishments rather than cluttering the entire surface.

White is the colour this season, Lina says but oranges and pinks will do very well. She interprets evening glitz not through glitter but style. Smitha Shroff of Oorja says, "Lina is so much into detailing, that she will not breathe free without creating the perfect ensemble."

Lina has predominantly used natural fabrics like raw silk, jute, pure chiffons and cottons. Her outfits are made of co-ordinates but can be used as separates. They are not a complete fusion as they come with the freedom of mix and match. So, one can choose to wear a kurta on a trouser as well as on a wrap around. With prices starting from Rs. 2,600, Linarika which is the name of the line may have clones but this original stands apart.
