The politics of free lunches
When the first gruel centre was opened in Andhra Pradesh, the Government dismissed it as a `political gimmick'. There are now 300 of them across the State, 200 in just two districts. Beneath it all is the real and serious problem of growing rural hunger and distress. Politically, too, it's a gruelling season in Andhra Pradesh, says P. SAINATH.
