Quizzing your way to glory

IT WAS a quiz contest with a difference. With the audiences divided into cheering groups supporting each and every team, it was held by none other than the much enthusiastic Barry O' Brien who has been hosting the series of Limca Book of Records Quiz Contests since 1992.

A grand finale to a two-month-long contest, the events which formed part of the quiz in New Delhi on Tuesday ranged from students shaking their legs to the tunes of "We will Rock You'' and cheering loudly on the tunes of Amar, Akbar and Anthony. Indeed, the FICCI auditorium was agog with ten teams from as many Indian cities -- Jamshedpur, Amritsar, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Vishakhpatnam, Bangalore, Hyderabad and of course Delhi.

Present on the occasion was the president of Coca Cola Alex von Behr, and the editor of the Limca Book of Records, Vijaya Ghosh. Tenth in the series of quiz contests which began in 1992, it had more than 360 schools participating in the initial round.

A quizmaster for the past ten years, Barry hails from a family of quizmasters in Kolkata where father Neil O' Brien and brother Derek O'Brien have been part of the history of quizzing in India. Speaking on the occasion, Barry said he was currently in the process of launching a website where people can log in and wish their favourite cricketers.

The valedictory function was presided over by Vir Sanghvi who congratulated this year's winning team from Frank Anthony, Bangalore followed by Hyderabad Public School and Mother's International, Delhi.
