Renew Yourself

NO MATTER what the profession that we may be in, at some point in our work life, even regularly sometimes, we feel that stagnation is setting in - goals start looking hazy and unattainable, performance levels slacken and self doubt looms large.

A moment's pause to the possibility of renewing oneself at regular intervals through conscious efforts could be worth it as it might save a lot of time and worry.

Where new age health gurus emphasise the importance of spiritual renewal, there other elements like physical health, emotional well-being and skill development are equally important.

Spiritual health

It has more to do with value clarification. One may have started looking for those material or intangible assets that one never set out for. Warped thoughts and actions that sap one's energy are the products of an unhealthy value pattern.

Similarly, a re-look at one's commitment levels will help in value clarification. Meditation to relieve one's mind of irrelevant negative thoughts will lead to spiritual renewal. It will increase awareness of self and you will feel a sense of control.

Emotional balance

One's interaction with others, its impact on one's mental health and work life are an important part of this aspect of self- renewal. If you are plagued by the rudeness of a stern boss, then try empathy. Try to understand his or her life situation. Our perceptions determine our emotional health. Perceptions that are marked by ruthlessness towards others and oneself, when it comes to expectations, will invariably cause distress.

Physical fitness

Exercise, stress-management and nutrition are three key elements when it comes to renewing one's body. Making changes in your daily routine to fit in a walk or a jog or yoga will help you in the long run. Psychologists have proved that exercise releases feel good hormones in the body that help you give a booster to your mind as well as your body. It also forms a part of stress management.

Self-renewal need not happen after the blues have surfaced. One can develop a habit of making a change in any one of the areas mentioned above to feel a sense of novelty and freshness in one's daily routine. Self- renewal is a positive step and its positive impact extends to personal as well as professional life.
