Adapting to a new post or responsibility
CONGRATULATIONS. So you have survived the pink slip nemesis and got yourself promoted in the bargain! You are up in the stratosphere, floating at two levels higher than cloud nine.
However, once the initial jubilation has abated, you find yourself confronted with new responsibilities, situations, problems, and old enemies.
How do you tackle these difficulties, adapt yourself to the job on hand and emerge victorious? Here's How:
Don't let success get to you
Okay, you have got the promotion.
You beat four other guys to get to the post. You are happy.
Those guys are perhaps feeling a little disheartened, may be even turning a little green with envy.
They may come up and congratulate you, but inside, they are probably eating their hearts out.
Take their compliments with a smile and a kind word. Let the success rest easy on you. Be as friendly and approachable as you have ever been.
There may be a number of humbugs, perpetually ready to throw a spanner in the works and land a double whammy on your face when you least expect it. Be prepared. Trust everybody, but do cut the cards!
Find yourself a friend, guide and philosopher
Having someone to turn to for advice in trying times is a definite plus.
It could be a co-worker or even your superior.
It could be a fellow manager who is handling a similar responsibility.
A friend will help you realise that you are not alone and there will be at least one other person in the office facing similar problems - someone that you can talk to or ask questions.
Expect the unexpected
Successful adjustment to a new job or a responsibility is largely dependent on your perceptions - If you think it is going to be easy and find the job tough, you are more likely to be demoralised and depressed by every minute road block that comes your way.
On the other hand, if you steel yourself for the worst, you are likely to find the going a lot easier than expected.
As someone once remarked, foolish questions are a lot easier to tolerate than foolish mistakes!
If you are unsure about how to go about the job, ask an experienced colleague to help you.
Make sure you know the `Whys', `Whats' and `Whens' of your job, before you get down to the nitty-gritty.
After all, you need to master simple maths before you formulate theorems in trigonometry!
Keep learning. That way, you keep the edge you have over competition. Stock up on that knowledge asset, as you would for survival in an impending war.
It is definitely going to come in useful. It not only enriches, but also puts you in a position to offer advice to other hopefuls.
Get on with that job!
Change is the only constant. All along you have been there on the shop floor, working your socks off for your company and suddenly they reward you by making you head of the team that formulates policies. A bolt from the blue? Never mind. Take the bull by its horns and get on with the job. All those years of being impinged upon by management stratagems should have given you a first-hand impression of how policies affect workers sweating it out in the shop floor (That was the reason they promoted you, in the first place!)
Don't rest on your laurels
There is no time for you to pause and reflect on your achievements, if you intend continuing in the rat race for success. Keep looking ahead. Broaden your vision, improve your skills, learn to manage people and to do things right and get geared up for that next promotion!!!
