Sailen Manna critically ill
Kolkata (PTI): Padmashree awardee Indian football legend Sailen Manna is critically ill and undergoing treatment at the AMRI hospital in Salt Lake.
The 83-year-old former India defender had fractured his right leg after in his residence on August six followed by a surgery at the SSKM Hospital.
The former Olympian was discharged on Monday (August 29) but within five hours of returning home he developed complications with high fever, his wife Ava said.
"He even stopped talking and was immediately rushed to AMRI where he was admitted at the ICCU. His situation had become worse. He is still critical and undergoing treatment. However, he has been shifted from ICCU but is under observation," Ava told PTI.
Manna was also a member of the first-ever Indian football team on an overseas tour that took part in the London Olympics. Playing barefoot, India lost to France 1-2 with Manna squandering a crucial penalty.
He led India won the gold medal in the inaugural Asian Games in 1951. He has also led India to four successive titles in the South East Asian quadrangular meet.
Having started his football career with the second division Howrah Union in the Calcutta League, Manna joined Mohun Bagan in 1942 and remained with the green-and-maroon brigade for the rest of his career.
