Coimbatore (PT): Over 1,500 students of Government Arts and Science college here on Thursday boycotted classes and staged dharna on its premises in protest against the move to convert the college as a university.

The government has reportedly proposed to convert this college along with four other government colleges and two private colleges into University. Public and NGOs are reportedly against this.

Claiming that fees would become unaffordable for poor students and reservation and quota systems would not be effective once the college was made university, the students, holding placards, raised slogans against the move, police said.
