Deepavali bonanza for movie buffs
S. R. ASHOK KUMAR
This time round Tamil film fans have a feast to look forward to.
EXCITING ARRAY: Dharmapuri, Thalaimagan, Vaathiyaar, Varalaru, E and Vattaram.
Tamil film fans never had it so good. As many as eight movies are expected to hit the screens. How many will finally make it is anybody's guess.
A sure candidate is `Dharmapuri,' Vijayakanth starrer, directed by Perarasu, also in charge of story, screenplay and dialogue. "Captain's fans are going to love every minute of it," says an excited Perarasu. How the hero overcomes odds to remain a good Samaritan is told with all the ingredients, one of which is Srikanth Deva's catchy tunes, he says.
Vijayakant, paired with Lakshmi Rai, is a happy man what with his political graph slowly but surely climbing. The star cast includes Rajesh, Peeli Sivam, M.S.Bhaskar, Vijayakumar and Anumohan. A.M.Rathnam produces the film for Sri Surya Movies.
Sarathkumar's 100th film
Thalaimagan is a landmark film for Sarath Kumar in several ways. It is his 100th film, which his wife Radhika is producing under the Radaan Media Banner, and he is turning director. After "Aiya" Nayantara pairs up with Sarath Kumar. Vadivelu takes care of the comedy track. The three villains are Seema Biswas, Mukesh Tiwari and John Vijay. Vijaykumar, Alex and Bala Singh are doing the other important characters in the film. DirectorCheran has written the screenplay. Paul Jacob and Srikanth Deva have scored the music. Kaimal handles the camera and editing is by Vijayan.
Arjun as teacher
Arjun's films always have a message. `Vathiyar' is no exception. He dons a teacher's role for the first time. He has a special word of praise for director A.Venkatesh and the crew. Mallika Kapoor is the leading lady.
D. Iman has scored the music with K.S.Selvaraj handling the camera. Gopinath has written the dialogue and stunts are by Powerfast. The cast includes Prakash Raj, Sujatha, Vadivelu, Manivannan, Pradeep Ravath (villain of `Gajani'), `Thalaivasal' Vijay, Devan and S.N.Parvathi.
In three different roles
"It is a complete entertainer, with Ajith appearing in four get-ups and three characters," says director K.S.Ravi Kumar. Nic Arts `God father,' rechristened "Varalaru" has all the commercial aspects to become a box office hit. Ajit Kumar for the first time has done three roles father, villain and son. Asin is the heroine with Ramesh Khanna, Rajesh, Sujatha, Suman Shetty, Santhana Bharathy, Mansoor Alikhan, Ponnambalam and Johny completing the cast. A.R.Rahman has scored the music for Vairamuthu's lyrics and editing is done by Thanikachalam. Story, screenplay and dialogue are also by Ravikumar.
Yet another case of a hero turning director is `Vallavan,' which narrates the story of a young man and the different stages of his life. "For any film screenplay is very important and in `Vallavan' I have taken a new route and let us see how the people receive it. I am doing four different characters with three heroines Reema Sen, Nayantara and `Kadhal' Sandhya taking care that all of them get equal share. Yuvan Shankar Raja has done wonderful work with Vaalee writing all the lyrics. I have the backing of the best technicians including Balakumaran who is writing the dialogue, `Kanal' Kannan for action, Antony for editing and Rajeevan for art," says Simbu, who calls Priyan the cinematographer, his eyes.
Gemini productions `Vattaram' is all about arms but it is not a dada film, assures director Saran. If it is sword or sickle that is involved one may procure them. But it is not easy to deal with pistols. One needs licence to possess them. We have managed it though," he adds.
``Good planning helped in finishing the work," Saran says. Arya, Napolean, Keerat and others make up the cast. Bharadwaj has scored the music and Vairamuthu has written the lyrics. "Saran is spontaneous and makes both working and watching the end product interesting. I really admired the way he taught the Mumbai heroine to speak Tamil," says Arya.
Executive producers of `Vattaram' are Mohana Mahendran and A.Venkatesh. The story, screenplay dialogue and direction are by Saran.
`E' for Easwaran
S.P.Jhananathan, who won the national award for `Iyarkai' is ready with `E,' made for Super Good films with Jeeva in the lead and Nayantara as the heroine. He has written the story and the screenplay apart from directing the film.
Kalyana Krishnan has written the screenplay.
"Half the battle is won if a good script is available. `E' is an example and I have a meaty role to play. Also I was lucky to have some excellent people as co-artistes Pasupathi, Asish Vidyarthy, Karunas and Parvathi to name a few and great technicians. I'm sure the film will be a box office hit," says Jeeva. Srikanth Deva has scored the music and V.T.Vijayan has done the editing. R.B.Chowdary is the producer.
When big-budget films are struggling to make it to the theatre "Manasukkule," a love tale with new faces like Abby, Akshaya, Bala prasad, Thulasi, Jaibalaji, Devan and Namirajan, is appearing. Vadivukkarasi, Nalini, Pallavi and Shakeela are the familiar actors.
Director Sriguru and the producer Ismail have immense faith in the story. Music is by Deva, camera is Ravi M.Sundaram and editing is done by Udaya shankar.
