Harischandra's saga

Sai Kala Niketan staged scenes from the poetic play `Satyaharischandra'

SAI KALA Niketan organised a stage show that featured "Vaaranaasi" and "Kaati", scenes taken from the poetic play "Satyaharischandra", written by Balijepalli Lakshmikantha Kavi. The event was held last week at Premasamajam Hall.

The extension of aalapana that followed after every rendition of the versified dialogue by Sesetti Tata Rao, who donned the role of Nakshatraka, was none too impressive.

However, the overall performance was marked by good team work from director B. V. A. Naidu (also the secretary of the Niketan), Varri Appala Naidu as Harischandra, B. A. Naidu as Kaalakousika, who purchases Harischandra's wife Chandramathi as a slave, and D. Jagga Rao as Veerabahu, the purchaser of the emperor himself.

The group did well in the histrionics department and sustained good tempo. T. Dali Naidu and G. S. Reddy as Kaalakousika's `shishyas' Kesava and Janardana, Master S. Prasad as Harischandra's son Lohitasya, L. Joga Rao as Siva and D. Vidyavathi as Chandramathi went a little overboard in their display of emotions.

Make-up by D. V. Narasingarao Naidu, set decor by M. Akkunaidu, lighting by P. V. R. Murthy, stage management by N. Simhadri and R. Kesava Raju, under the overall supervision of Chowdari Appa Rao, were commendable.

Bagadi Vijaya Saradhi on the harmonium lent very good support. Honorary president of the Niketan, well-known financier Ganta Appala Naidu, introduced the chief guest of the evening, advocate B. S. Rama Mohan, who presented mementos to the artistes.
