A unique display of maternal instinct

"The Heart of the Lioness" on Animal Planet, Monday, 22.00.

WATCH THE tale of this amazing mother-lioness and her family of antelopes in "The Heart of a Lioness" on Animal Planet, May 10, 22.00. Keepers at the Samburu Reserve in Kenya, home to some of Africa's most dangerous predators, were shocked at the `unnatural' behaviour of a young lioness that adopts an infant antelope and mothers it with infinite tenderness. The scientific community is astonished by this strange quality of the lioness.

Join wildlife expert Saba Douglas-Hamilton in his journey through the life of the adopted antelope and its surrogate mother. Unfortunately, this touching story takes an ugly turn when a lion kills and eats the calf in the presence of its distraught foster mother. After the incident, the lioness disappears - only to be sighted five weeks later with a second baby oryx. Saba re-enters the story of this miracle lioness, referred to by local people as Namunyak, on a quest for the real meaning behind her remarkable behaviour. By following Namunyak through the important rite of passage into adulthood, Saba sheds light on one of Africa's most intriguing mysteries.
